THE KERUS ORPHAN CARE CENTER
The Kerus Orphan Care Center is located in the township of Soshanguve, just outside of Pretoria, South Africa. Soshanguve deals with over 60% unemployment, with an average household income of $172 per month, used to care for an average of 10 persons in the home. With over 2 million orphans in South Africa, and equivalent to 30,000 busloads of children in the U.S., the orphan crisis has overwhelmed the local community and children are in desperate need.
The children come to the center 365 days of the year to eat regular meals, receive medical care as needed, and education and spiritual development training that will help them chart a positive course for their lives. They attend school and live with caring families in the community, often grandmothers who agree to watch over large numbers of children at a time. The care center model is there to assist those caring for these children; it does not replace the caring adult who watches them in the evening and teaches them core values and appreciation for their rich cultural history. Our goal with this project is to inspire and equip the local church to be a beacon in the community for compassionate care for those in great need and a trumpet for biblically-based solutions to the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Kerus Orphan Care Center serves a minimum of 100 orphans 365 days a year.
